They say only two things are certain – death and taxes. But for entrepreneurs, we can add a third: frustration with your business. If you’ve been running your own business for longer than a few months, you know what I’m talking about.
In the beginning stages of owning a business, there is little time or space for disappointment. After all, no one really expects a business to turn a profit at first, and the excitement of the startup provides enough momentum to carry you through any rough spots that come up.
But count on it: the honeymoon stage can end rather rudely as you realize your business isn’t quite meeting the expectations you had for it, and that can put a real damper on your entrepreneurial mojo.
You know the drill. Either you don’t have enough time, or the time you have is largely spent in paralysis because you don’t know what to do next. Your profits are too low, but all you know is to keep doing what you’ve always done, and that is getting you nowhere. You don’t have enough clients, you haven’t touched your marketing in months, you have too many projects started, you feel isolated with no mentor to guide you and the closest thing you have to a “system” is the consistency with which you reach for the chocolate when the overwhelm closes in on you.
Do you wonder how I know all this? Because it’s normal. Rest assured that hundreds of entrepreneurs have experienced the same thing – and have gone on to overcome the obstacles and emerge as strong, confident owners of profitable businesses.
So can you.
Let’s talk about how.
Tenacious Beyond Belief
First, having made it this far in your business, you’ve proven you’re made of the right stuff to see it through.
In a Forbes article on the traits of incredibly successful entrepreneurs, Eric Wagner highlights what may be the number one characteristic of entrepreneurs – the “crème de la crème” trait: tenacity. In Wagner’s words, “Tenacious beyond belief. True entrepreneurs never, never, never quit. Never.”
He goes on,
“Are things going to look impossible for you as an entrepreneur? You better believe it. Will you feel like giving up and throwing in the towel? Absolutely. But do you need to fight off the urge to quit and keep pressing on? YES!”1
So ground yourself here: you’re one of ‘those’ entrepreneurs. You’re still with it, you’re determined to see it through, and you’re not afraid of a little hard work to move your business to the next level.
Rx for Success
We’ve established that your business needs help and you’re committed to seeing the transformation through to excellence. What next?
- To begin with, you diagnose where the weak areas in your business are. Find out what is holding your business back from being the powerhouse that you know it could be.
- Next, create a strategy – a plan of attack to mercilessly revamp every key area in your business (and even in your personal life) that is functioning below the level it needs to be in order to put you on the road to a thriving business.
- Finally, work the plan. You put that tenacity to work in taking action and not settling for mediocrity. In this stage, you know what to do, so do it. That’s what successful entrepreneurs do!
By now you’re probably thinking, “That all sounds great, but how do I diagnose the weak areas and create a strategy? If I could have done that by now, I would have!”
I have great news: help is here and it won’t cost you a penny. It’s my gift to you.
