You’ve heard what assuming can do, right? But what about if you assume your business tools are working properly…and they’re not? What happens when a prospect calls and your voicemail system isn’t working properly? Or what if a prospect visits your website or blog, and gets an error?
It can happen. Just because it works today does not mean it will work tomorrow!
Recently I tried to order my daughter’s graduation invitation and class ring…several times. I’d get several steps into the multi-step process when I’d get an error that the page doesn’t exist. I tried numerous times over different days. I tried using Internet Explorer, and I tried using Firefox. I searched the website for contact information, and all I could find was a phone number. I called the number and went into that horrible voicemail loop. “Press 1 for locations and hours, press 2 for customer service.” I press 2 and hear, “Press 1 for locations and hours, press 2 for customer service.” Really?? The website and their phone system?
Now, if this were something that I could move on and go to the competitor, I would. Unfortunately, I don’t have a choice in this circumstance, but there will be a rep at the school next week, and I’ll send the order in that way, along with a note to check their phone system and website.
But what would your prospects or clients do if that happens to them? Will they move on? Chances are they will.
How can you safeguard yourself? By checking your own website and blog weekly and making sure it is okay. Check it using different internet browsers, such as Internet Explorer and Firefox. And be sure to “refresh” to make sure you’re getting a current view of the page.
Also call your phone to make sure it’s working. If you have a receptionist and employees, make a call and pretend to be a prospect. Make sure your employees are responding appropriately. If not, then training is in order!
